NORMAN — John Drummond Wheeler and Carol Joann Rutz were married June 22, 1958, in a small country church in Hucmac.
They met in the fall of 1956 at a party hosted at the nurses’ dormitory at Central State Hospital. Carol was a student nurse studying psychiatry and John was attending the University of Oklahoma majoring in electrical engineering. The nurses had invited the men from Whitehand House to attend that night.
Carol graduated from Oakwood high school in Oakwood and Enid General Hospital School of Nursing. John graduated from high school at Los Alamos, N.M., then went one semester at Oklahoma A&M in Stillwater. John served four years in the Navy, then enrolled at OU.
After they were married and a short honeymoon to Red River, N.M., they moved to Albuquerque.
After a few more moves, they settled in Norman in 1968. In 1997, John retired from electricians Local 1141 in Oklahoma City and Carol retired from Norman Regional Hospital, where she had worked as RN in the flex-pool for several years.
They are enjoying their retirement with grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
John has played trombone and baritone in the New Horizons Band for several years.
They are active members of East Robinson Baptist Church. They have four children: Donna and her husband John Reynolds, Matt and his wife Christy Wheeler, Paula and her husband Dennis Swing of Norman and Anna and her husband Chuck Horner of Stillwater.
They have 10 grandchildren, Graycen, Luke and Abby Wheeler, Carson, Sophia and Charlie Horner, Rachel Swing, Johnny Blaul and Rachel Blaul and Johnson and husband Austin of Dallas, and two great-grandchildren, Emerson and Avonlea Johnson.
