NEW: Prescription drug round-up planned Saturday in county

Transcript Staff

Cleveland County District Attorney Greg Mashburn and Sheriff Joe Lester said their Prescription Drug Round-Up, sponsored by the sheriff's and district attorney's offices and conducted April 27, collected 100 pounds of expired drugs.

Accidental overdose of prescription drug abuse is the leading cause of death among youth, according to a Sheriff's Department press release, and Lester and Mashburn said they worked with the Aging Services Inc. and the Areawide Aging Agency to advertise the prescription drug roundup to get expired drugs off the street.

"This was an outstanding first step and I compliment the citizens of Cleveland County for responding to our call to roundup expired drugs," Lester said.

Mashburn said: "Saving our youth from expired drugs is critical, and our roundup was a tremendous success. We look forward to continued success."

Further prescription roundups are scheduled May 30 and June 27, the last Saturday of May and June, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The drop-off locations include the Homeland grocery stores in Norman, the Noble Superette, the Gas-N-Go in Lexington, St. Andrews United Methodist Church in Oklahoma City, the Homeland at 10700 S. Pennsylvania Ave. in Oklahoma City and First Baptist Church of Moore.
