Savage, Patrick and Walker named site teachers

By Peggy Laizure

Fisher Elementary School site teacher of the year, Stephanie Savage, graduated from Yukon High School and Southwestern Oklahoma State University. She has been married for 19 years to Scott and the have three children, Blake, Paige and Allison.

Savage taught Central upper elementary in Moore before taking an 11-year break to stay home with her children. When the youngest began to attend school all day, she did substitute teaching.

"When the time arrived for me to go back to work full-time, I was very fortunate to find a fifth grade position at Fisher elementary where my own children attended school," Savage said. "I feel so incredibly honored to have been selected Teacher of the Year at Fisher."

"I love teaching fifth grade because the kids are at such a fun age," she said. "I enjoy all the subjects I teach, but I especially enjoy social studies. It is rewarding to see the students' excitement in learning about American's rich history."

"In my classroom, I try to incorporate games, songs and manipulatives to help my students find joy in learning," Savage said. "I strive to make my class a place where my students want to come every day."

Tammy Patrick began her teaching career at Sky Ranch in October of 2000 and was selected the 2009-2010 Sky Ranch site Teacher of the Year.

She went to college with one of the other teachers at Sky Ranch. The teacher told Patrick about a position that would be available in October of 2000.

"I taught science for four years before moving to the sixth grade, where I am teaching language arts (reading, writing and language)," Patrick said. "I believe if I am kind and work hard, then I can expect the same from my students," she said. "I don't look at teaching as a job, I see it as an opportunity to make a difference in the life of a child."

Although Patrick does not live in Moore (she lives in Chickasha), she doesn't mind the 40 minute drive to work every day.

"Moore is a great school system and I love teaching here," she said.

Janice Walker, Red Oak elementary site teacher graduated from Oklahoma Christian University with a bachelor of science in business administration.

After having her first child, Walker went back to school and received her elementary teaching certification. She has been in the Moore school district for 17 years and has taught sixth grade at Red Oak for 13 years.

"During that time I have had the privilege of teaching both of my children, a niece, a nephew and many students from our church," Walker said. "I love teaching math and enjoy seeing students develop the skills needed to be successful in life."

My favorite part of teaching is knowing I have the opportunity to influence young people each and every day," she said. "I hope to have a positive impact on as many lives as possible. I believe if parents, students and teachers work together we can build a bright future for our youngsters."
