NORMAN — One out of three adults lives with prediabetes, most of which are unaware of their condition. If you have prediabetes, you are 5 to 15 times more likely to develop type 2 diabetes than people with normal blood glucose (blood sugar) levels. However, type 2 diabetes can be prevented or delayed with a healthy lifestyle.

Norman Regional Health System’s Diabetes Education Center is bringing the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Diabetes Prevention Program to Norman through funding provided by the American Association of Diabetes Educators in partnership with the CDC.

To learn more about the program, which advocates lifestyle changes, community members can attend one of four informational sessions: 7:30 a.m. or 5:30 p.m. April 30 at Norman Regional Hospital Education Center, 901 N. Porter Ave., and 7:30 a.m. or 5:30 p.m. May 2 at The HealthPlex, First Floor Conference Room, 3300 HealthPlex Pkwy.

To qualify for the program, a person must be at high risk for developing diabetes or have been diagnosed by a physician as someone with prediabetes. To take a quick assessment to see if you are at risk, go to www.cdc.gov/diabetes/prevention/prediabetes.htm and take the short prediabetes assessment quiz.

The National DPP helps those at high risk for developing type 2 diabetes adopt and maintain a healthy lifestyle by eating right, increasing physical activity and losing a modest amount of weight.

Program participants meet in a small group with a trained lifestyle coach during weekly one-hour sessions to learn about ways to make healthy changes. Topics include healthier eating, getting started with physical activity, overcoming stress, staying motivated and more. Group members will help to motivate and encourage each other.

After the initial 16 sessions, participants meet monthly for additional support to help maintain their progress.
