NORMAN — Norman Mayor Cindy Rosenthal has commissioned a committee made up of interested Norman residents to form a Veterans Day Parade on Nov. 11. This year’s parade follows on the success of the parade last year in honor of veterans.

Last year’s parade was the first since 1944, when the returning World War II veterans marched the streets of Norman. The parade will begin at 2 p.m. and follow last year’s route, starting on James Garner Boulevard, just south of the train depot, proceeding south on Jenkins to Constitution Avenue and ending in Reaves Park at the Cleveland County Veterans Memorial.

The 77th Army Band out of Ft. Sill will join the parade this year. The Norman parade has been designated as an official Veterans Day Regional Site by the Department of Veterans Affairs.

The theme for the parade this year is Welcome Home 45th. The 45th Infantry Brigade has returned from their recent deployment to Afghanistan. Eleven soldiers were killed in action, three died later from their wounds and many were injured. Committee members are inviting honor guards, marching bands, floats, motorcycle groups and car clubs to participate and honor veterans.

Following the parade, there will be a ceremony — including a F-16 flyover — at the Cleveland County Veterans Memorial in Reaves Park, starting at 4 p.m. Brigadier General James Richardson, the Deputy Commanding General for III Corps at Ft. Hood, Texas, will be the keynote speaker.

To register to participate in the parade, contact Jud Foster, director of Norman Parks and Recreation, at 366-5472 or via email at jud.foster@normanok.gov. The entry deadline is Nov. 1.
