NORMAN — Thousands showed up for a “Day of Thanks” at Journey Church in Norman on Sunday for fun and food.

“We just wanted to thank all the volunteers that helped with the disaster relief stuff,” said Beau Davis, first impressions coordinator at the church. “We wanted to say thank you to them, kind of relax, look back and reflect on what God has done and celebrate all the help we’ve had.”

Davis said there were thousands of volunteers that helped out with around 400 people every Saturday and around 100 people on week days every day since the May 20 tornado.

“We had 600 people up here at one time,” Davis said.

Some of the volunteers helping at Journey Church would even sleep at the church to help with the continuous efforts. Davis said there were volunteers there 24-7.

To celebrate the volunteers the church had moonbounces, rock climbing and lots of free food donated from Raising Cane’s, Chicken Express, Rusty’s Frozen Custard, McAlister’s and others.

“It’s not about us, it’s about God,” Davis said. “It’s not about Journey at all, we’re just a building.”

He said they couldn’t have done everything without all of the volunteers that came together to help out those affected in their time of need.
