Melton H. Shobert

NORMAN — Melton H. Shobert, 81, longtime resident of Niagara Falls, passed away Monday, April 29, 2013, at Northgate Health Facility. He was born in Noble on March 27, 1932, a son of the late Pleas J. and Annie D. (Kirby) Shobert.

He attended schools at Maquire and rural schools and Noble High School and then entered the U.S. Army on May 8, 1952. Mr. Shobert served in Battery C, 44th Gun Battalion (90MM) and received the National Defense Service Medal.

He served in active duty for two years until his honorable discharge in May 1954, when he transferred to the Army Reserves until 1960.

Mr. Shobert married Sally M. Wilson in First United Methodist Church on Oct. 10, 1953, and they remained happily married for 55 years until her passing in 2009.

He worked at Carborundum for more than 27 years and then worked for Fujisawa for more than nine years until his retirement.

He enjoyed woodcarving, whittling, fishing and working in the garden and was a diehard Buffalo Sabres fan, but his greatest joy was his time with his family.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was predeceased by his son, Linwood Shobert, and his sister, Norma Jean Smith.

Mr. Shobert is survived by his daughters Ruth (Randy) Bennett of Niagara, N.Y., and Norma Shobert of Wood River, Ill.; two grandsons, Thomas (Roberta) Thorp and Kyle Bennett; and great-grandson, Julian Thorp.

He also is survived by six siblings, Calvin and Wayne Shobert, Lucile Edwards, Thomas Shobert, Nelda Morris and Richard Shobert, all of Oklahoma. Mr. Shobert married into a wonderful family and is survived by brothers and sisters-in-law Charles Wilson, Donnie (Mary) Wilson, Roger (Jeannie) Wilson, Ronald (Marie) Wilson, Nancy (late Clifford) Mettler, Betty Lowell, Thelma (Robert) Shapiro and Gene (Lee) McCollum.

Mr. Shobert was laid to rest in Riverdale Cemetery in Lewiston, N.Y.
