George Paul Michael Sr.

NORMAN — George Paul Michael Sr. died Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2014, in Oklahoma City. He was born June 20, 1934, in Norman, to Gene and Avo Beda Michael.

He attended Norman High School and, after graduation, served his country in the 11th Airborne Division at Fort Campbell, Ky. He was honorably discharged in 1955. George graduated from Oklahoma City University in 1959 with a BS in business. He was employed by General Mills as national product sales manager for a number of years before founding and operating The Metro Oil Company and The Sunbelt Petroleum Company in Oklahoma City. George enjoyed a lengthy retirement that included golf, traveling and spending time with family. He was a longtime member of the First Christian Church of Norman.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Avo Jean Michael.

George is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Betty Jones Michael; his daughter, Stephanie Michael Watts; daughter, Susan Michael Lathrop; son, George Paul Michael Jr.; brother-in-law, Jimmy R. B. Jones; and son-in-law Anthony Philip Lathrop.

The family would like to thank the staff of Crossroads Hospice and Prairie Winds Alzheimer’s Special Care Center for the love and grace they showed George and the pleasant support they provided his loved ones.

A graveside service, conducted by Rev. Catherine Bennett, was 11 a.m. Friday at Rose Hill Cemetery, followed by a reception at Hahn-Cook Street & Draper.
