Roma Ruth McKee

NORMAN — Roma Ruth McKee, 97, of Cordell, was born Oct. 22, 1916, in Foss to Albert Jackson and Mollie Mae (Hatchett) Reeder. She passed away Monday evening, Feb. 10, 2014, in Norman.

Roma was raised in Coopertown, graduating as valedictorian and president of the 1934 class. She played basketball, baseball and was on the debate team and musical productions.

She married Virgil Wilson Hunsinger in 1934. They had two sons, Rodney Kent and Charles Brent. While living in Coopertown, she began teaching dance to a few students.

When the family moved to Mountain View, her classes grew and expanded to other towns throughout the area in the 1950s. She received state and national acclaim for her square dancing and tap dance groups.

Roma married Hurshel McKee in 1963. Residing in Cordell in a house she designed and he built, she became a homemaker. That did not deter her enthusiasm with which she approached every new adventure and the tenacity to carry each out.

Her participation in local, state and national politics, playing bridge for keeps and oil painting were well known. Roma was an elder in the First Presbyterian Church in Cordell and participated in church activities.

At age 92, Roma moved to Norman, where her family cherished her presence until her death. She will always be remembered as a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend.

Roma was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands, Virgil and Hurshel; her beloved son, Charles Brent; three brothers, Rivers, Lloyd and Jack Reeder; and one sister, Edith Lester.

Roma is survived by her son, Rodney K. Hunsinger and wife Cheryl and daughter-in-law, Rosemarie Hunsinger, all of Norman; two granddaughters, Tracy Jackson and husband Audie of Conroe, Texas, and Tara Thompson of Norman; one grandson, Rodney K. Hunsinger II and wife Erin, of Norman; great-grandchildren Dalton and Delaney Jackson, Taylor and Tia Thompson and Kylie and Rodney K. Hunsinger III; three sisters, Neta Adams of Wichita, Kan., Neville Hancock of Hobart and Theda Deaver of Granberry, Texas; and numerous nephews, nieces and friends.

Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Lonestar Cemetery in Rocky, under the direction of Musick-Varner Funeral Home in Cordell.
