NORMAN — Laverne Hickman, 88, of Purcell, passed away Tuesday evening, Feb. 11, 2014, in Purcell. She was born Aug. 14, 1925, in Wanette. She was the second of five children born to William Jackson Hopkins and Lou Effie (Blevins) Hopkins.

Laverne grew up a farm girl living west of Wanette. In her earlier years, she attended Liberty Hill a small country school. She finished high school at Wanette, graduating with the class of 1943.

She later married the love of her life, a young man from the same area named Clyde Hickman. They were married July 1945 and together made their first home on a farm near Wanette. Laverne and Clyde raised two sons, Terry and Gary. After farming for several years, they operated a soda shop and variety store for several more years in Wanette. During this time, they even ran a movie theater in Wanette. In 1956, Laverne and Clyde moved to Purcell and operated a gas station for several years. In the early 1960s, Laverne and her sister, Ruth, went to beauty school to become beauticians. For more than 40 years, they operated the “Cut-N-Curl” beauty shop on Gros Ventre in Purcell.

Laverne had many hobbies throughout her life. She and Clyde enjoyed traveling, especially to the northwest United States. She also enjoyed gardening, sewing, quilting, crocheting, knitting and cooking. Most of all, she enjoyed spending time with her family.

She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Effie Hopkins; one brother, Roy Hopkins; one sister, Edith Higgins; and one stepgreat-grandson.

She is survived by her husband, Clyde of the home; two sons, Terry Hickman of Oklahoma City and Gary Hickman and wife Vickie of Norman; two sisters, Ruth Malicoat of Noble and Margie Hackett and husband John of Tecumseh; three stepgrandchildren; seven stepgreat-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Graveside services will be 2 p.m. today at Hillside Cemetery in Purcell.
