NORMAN — Madelon Black Tirey died suddenly on Feb. 24, 2014, in Atlanta, from complications of a fall. A memorial service was Saturday March 1 in Atlanta at Mount Paran Church. A memorial service will be 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at Bixby Memorial chapel at Grace Episcopal Church in Muskogee. Interment will be in Greenhill Cemetery in Muskogee. Contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to Human Rights Watch.
Madelon was born on June 15, 1930, in Des Moines, Iowa, the daughter of Herbert Black and Helen Wilson Black. She married William Dean in 1947 on Bride and Groom, the radio show in Los Angeles. They were blessed with two daughters and a son. Madelon was also married to Martin Rutledge and Lucius Christopher Tirey with whom she was married for 26 years.
Madelon was preceded in death by her parents, her husbands and by her sister Georgia Leeds of Muskogee.
Those left to remember her include her three children, Deborah Dean Manasse and husband Jerry Catalano of Palatine, Ill., Dana Dean Sorrel and husband Brad Sorrell of Mays Lick, Ky. and Rick Dean and wife Terri Dean of Plantation, Fla. She leaves one sister, Brenda Wilbourn of Muskogee. Her legacy lives on in her great grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren, as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and other loved ones.
