Flora Ellen Mitchell Curry

NORMAN — Flora Ellen Mitchell Curry died peacefully at her home Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2013, after an extended illness. She was 84.

Flora was born Dec. 16, 1929, in Electra, Texas, to William Rudyard Kipling Mitchell and Sarah Thelma (Turner) Mitchell. The family later moved to Bowie, Texas, where Flora graduated from high school in 1947. She graduated college from Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, Texas, in 1968.

On March 17, 1951, Flora married Billy Ray Curry of Henrietta, Texas, in the First Baptist Church of Bowie. To this marriage was born a daughter, La Donna Ann, and then a son, Billy Ray Junior. Flora and her family moved to Norman on Aug. 2, 1972, and have lived on East Robinson ever since. After graduation from college, Flora taught school in the Gardener, Kan., public school system and later in Oklahoma City public schools, teaching math and science at Roosevelt Middle School.

Flora was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Bill Mitchell of Scott City, Kansas; a brother, Paul Mitchell of Ingleside, Texas; and a sister, Julia Immell of Forth Worth, Texas.

She is survived by her husband of the home; her daughter, Ladonna and husband Jon of Moore; a son, Billy Ray and wife Cheri of Garland, Texas; granddaughter, Devin Marie Ziegler, husband Eric and sons Ashton and Ethan, all of McKinney, Texas; and granddaughter, Emily Switzer and husband John of Moore.

Flora was loved and respected by everyone who knew her. She lived her life according to the Golden Rule: “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” Flora also believed that if you could not speak well of someone, do not speak of them at all. Flora was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. We are all going to miss you, but knowing where you have gone brings us peace.

A graveside memorial for Flora will be 10 a.m. Friday at IOOF Cemetery in Norman. Bro. Ken Huddleston, pastor of the Immanuel Baptist Church, will conduct the services, assisted by Glen Vaught.
