NORMAN — Terry Joe Shaw, 66, died Dec. 21, 2013. He was born Jan. 20, 1947, in Cherokee, to Harold and Edith Shaw. He grew up on the family wheat farm and attended Burlington school where he was valedictorian, active in FFA and was named a State Star Farmer.
Terry received his B.S. in biochemistry from Oklahoma State University where he was a member of FarmHouse Fraternity.
He married Karen Taggart of Stillwater in 1969. He then earned his master’s degree in molecular biology from University of California — San Diego while doing cancer research at the Salk Institute. Terry then taught middle school science in Arizona.
After his wife Karen was killed in an auto accident, he returned to OSU to earn his doctorate degree in science education. In 1975, he married Thelia Sewell of Perry, and they had two children, Tarren John and Tana Elaine.
Terry loved teaching science and loved making a difference in the life of students. He taught at Stillwater Middle School, Kansas State, OSU and at Irving Middle School in Norman. Thelia preceded him in death.
Along with his teaching, Terry developed hands on science curriculum for the Lawrence Hall of Science at UC-Berkeley. He continued to develop course curriculum and provide professional development for science educators until his death.
Terry received numerous awards for teaching including the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science Teaching, the National Environmental Education Teacher of the Year, the Outstanding Middle School Science Teacher of the Year for Oklahoma, the Outstanding Instructor in the College of Education at OSU and in 2013, was inducted into the OSU College of Education Hall of Fame.
Terry is a member of Alameda Church of Christ in Norman. Terry loved motorcycle camping, bicycling and was up for any adventure with his family and friends.
Terry was married to Skye Diers, of Norman, in 2006. Together they have five children.
He is survived by his wife Skye, of Norman, and their children, Tarren Shaw of Norman, Tana (Chad) Cartwright and son, Josiah of Dallas, Jake Dragoo of Oklahoma City, Ben Dragoo (fiancé Micah Watson) of Norman and Tucker (Elizabeth) Dragoo of Yukon; Terry’s two sisters, Gwen Shaw of Edmond and Dixie (Greg) Thomas; niece, Amanda (Ed) Blake of Richardson, Texas; and nephew, Tyler Thomas of Wichita, Kan.
Memorials may be made to the OSU Foundation or the Oklahoma 4-H Foundation.
Family visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday. Services will be 2 p.m. Friday at Alameda Church of Christ with burial at Keith Cemetery, southwest of Burlington, at 1 p.m. Saturday.
