Vernon Harold Grissom

NORMAN — Vernon Harold Grissom, of Tulsa, Okla. passed away January 27, 2014 at the age of 97.  Born March 11, 1916 to Cyrus Dion Grissom and Susie Cavanee Grissom in Noble Oklahoma. After his mother died at a young age, Vernon and his two siblings were fortunate to have a second mother who loved them and raised them along with seven half brothers and sisters when his father married Nellie Stufflebean Grissom.

Vernon met and married his lifelong soul mate Florence Julia Wampler in Norman, Okla. 75 years ago where they raised four children and remained there until 2009 when they moved to Tulsa to be near their daughter. Together they were members of the First Christian Church in Norman all of their married life.

Vernon has always been committed to his country and his community.  He served in the U.S. Army in Japan following WWII.  Following his military service, he taught school for a couple of years and then worked as a mail carrier with the U.S. Postal Service where he later became superintendent of mail. He finished his work career as store manager at Sherwin Williams.  After retiring, his passion was exploring the U.S. and the world with his wife and giving his time to others. He volunteered with the Red Cross and delivered Meals on Wheels for decades. Always keeping his word, this lifelong learner and Sooner fan returned to finish his degree from OU at age 76.

A loving husband, father, and grandfather, he will be remembered by all who knew him for his passion for storytelling, his positive attitude, sense of humor, willingness to help others and everlasting faith in the Almighty.

He is preceded in death by daughter Ramona (Charles) Farmer and sons Don Grissom and Jerry Grissom. He is survived by wife Florence Grissom, daughter Judy (Robert) Clark, Grandchildren Tom (Shay) Farmer, Tammy (Bill) Georges, Melinda (Chris) Edgerton, Gannon Clark and Leigh (Brad) Lowe, and great grandchildren Sean Helm, Emily Farmer and Andrew Edgerton.
