NORMAN — Barbara Joan Kizer Scott, 80, was born to Virginia (Carter) and William Samuel Oliver on July 23, 1933, in Norman. She died Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2014, in Norman.

Known to everyone as Joan, she grew up a shy and quiet child during the Great Depression. Joan loved to play baseball and spend time with her dad, Sam, on the family farm. She cared for her brothers Jackie Wayne and Donnie like another mother. Joan was a big influence in their lives. Big sister, Ruby, was her best friend and confidant.

Joan grew up strong and resilient. She married J. B. Kizer in the summer of 1952. Sons Carl and Terry came shortly after they married following her dearest sister Ruby’s passing. Teresa was born the next year giving the boys a little sister. Bouncing baby brother Doug was born in July 1955, completing the clan.

She was a devoted wife, mother, sister, aunt, grandmother and friend throughout her life. She was the one that everyone went to for love, advice, friendship and strength during troubled times. She loved us all with great compassion and understanding.

Joan married Junior Scott in 1979, bringing Mike, Michele and Mitch into our lives. Junior’s brothers, sisters and their families enriched our lives as well. As the family grew exponentially, so did the family reunions. They attended them faithfully, enjoying the Scott family camaraderie.

Joan was blessed by very close and loving relationships with her children, grandchildren and nieces. She spent her life in the service of others and taught us to do the same.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sister Ruby; brothers Donnie and Jack; husbands J. B. and Junior; sons Terry Kizer and Mike Scott; and grandson First Lt. David Timothy Wright II.

Joan is survived by son Carl Smith and daughter Teresa Paine (and husband Allie), daughter Michele Wright (and husband Tim) and son Mitchell Scott (and wife Angie); grandsons Allie Paine III (and wife Jenny), Tom Smith (and wife Amy) and Hunter Scott; granddaughters Ashley White (and husband Austin), Jonna Siegrist, Carla Emmons (and husband Jerry) and Hailey Scott; great-grandchildren Garret and Allie IV Paine, Houston, Hunter and Addison Siegrist, Cole and Grady Emmons, Kaitlyn, Braxton and Charlie Smith; beloved nieces Jackie Nelson, Dorie Romano, Kellie Wright and Ginger James; great-nieces Lyndsie England, Brandi Jewell, Alex Drummond and Mary Beth Navitt; and great-nephew Marshall Worster.

A memorial service will be 10 a.m. Monday at Primrose Funeral Service, 1109 N. Porter in Norman. Services are entrusted to Primrose Funeral Service. To obtain more information on the services or to leave condolences to the family, please visit our website, primrosefuneralservice.com.
