Harold Clyde ‘PaPa’ Liddell

NORMAN — Harold Clyde “PaPa” Liddell, a loving father of five children, a grandfather to 11, and a great-grandfather to 35, went to be with the Lord Saturday, Jan. 4, 2014. He was 89 years old.

Harold was born Nov. 12, 1924, in Marlow. He and his three brothers and two sisters grew up in Shawnee during the Depression years. After graduating from Shawnee High School in 1943, he joined the Marine Corps and fought bravely in World War II in the Pacific on Guadalcanal. After the war, he returned to play football at Tulsa University and marry the love of his life, Jean Marie Boyd from Shawnee. After becoming the director of the YMCA, they both worked with youth, forming “Teen Town,” a place for underprivileged children. He was also the assistant football coach at Shawnee High School.

After their first child, Nancy, was born, they moved to Edinburg, Texas, to manage a farm orchard in the Rio Grande Valley. It was there they had three more children: Judi, Mike and Mark. The family moved to Illinois, where they briefly lived and worked until the birth of their fifth child, Mickey; at that time, they moved their family of seven back to Norman.

Harold entered the construction business and became one of the largest home builders in the state. He impacted the growth of Norman by building single-family homes, apartments, office buildings, the Trails Golf Course, United Bank, Rivermont Retirement Village and many commercial projects.

Although he was a successful businessman, his greatest priority was his family. He desired to attend all his children’s, grandchildren’s and great-grandchildren’s sporting events and activities. They could always count on his feedback on how well they had done and would challenge them to move to the next level.

Many lives were changed by his ability to encourage and empower people to believe they could achieve their goals and do anything they put their mind to.
