Mary Elizabeth Edge

NORMAN — Mary Elizabeth Edge, 91, of Norman, died Sunday, June 9, 2012, in Norman.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, June 15, at St. Charles Borromeo Chapel in the St. Joseph Parish Family Center. Interment will be in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery. An evening prayer service will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Primrose Chapel. Services are by Primrose Funeral Service.

Mary was born March 25, 1921, in Biddeford, Maine, to John Weldon and Patricia Catherine (Campbell) Jordan. The family later moved to San Antonio, Texas, in 1928.

She graduated from St. Mary’s High School in 1939 and went on to receive a Bachelor of Science degree from Our Lady of The Lake in San Antonio in 1943.

Mary was proud to serve our country during World War II.

She married Edward Earl Edge on January 15, 1948, in San Antonio, Texas. They moved to Norman later that year. She was a dietitian at Central State from 1960 until her retirement from there in September 1980. She attended St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and was part of the VFW Lodge in Norman. She was also a proud member of the American Dietetic Association.

Mary opened her home to many young teens. Through good and bad times she was a home away from home for many of Norman’s troubled youth. She is remembered fondly by many in Norman as the surrogate mother who loved them unconditionally.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward Earl Edge, and her brother, James C. Jordan.

Survivors include four sons, George W. Edge of Grand Junction, Colo., Edward E. Edge of Norman, Robert F. Edge and wife, Kathy, of Bacliff, Texas, and David M. Edge and wife Tammie of Baytown, Texas; one daughter, Ellen A. and husband Arlie Abbott; a step-granddaughter, Leah Whitaker; three grandchildren, Billy Edge, Michael Edge and Lindy Edge; two sisters, Margaret J. Cammarota of New York City and Patsy and husband Don Knowlan of Victoria, Texas; and one great-grandchild.

The family requests donations be made on Mary’s behalf to the Center for Children and Families, 1151 E. Main St. Norman, OK 73071 or Health For Friends, PO Box 1224, Norman, OK 73070.
