John David West

NORMAN — John David West, 63, of Norman, passed away Monday, March 10, 2014. He was born Dec. 30, 1950, in Sapulpa Creek, to Virginia Lea Barkley and Andrew “Bobby” West.

John joined the United States Army in 1969 and served as a military police officer until 1972. He received a National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Services Medal, Expert Rifle Badge and an Expert Handgun Badge.

John worked for the Sand Springs Police Department after he was honorably discharged from the military. John was hired by the Norman Police Department in 1975, where he dedicated 21 years of service, retiring in 1997. As a detective in the Child Abuse Division, he saved many children from further pain and abuse.

After retirement from the Norman Police Department, John went to work for the Cleveland County Sheriff’s Office. He was affectionately known as “deputy” by the students at ASE and Leland Wolf Alternative School. He was a positive influence on many young lives. John’s sincere love for children has shown through the years.

He was an enthusiastic fisherman and loved spending time on the lake with his many fishing buddies. John had a great passion for sports and was a lifelong fan of OU sports.

John was the ultimate family man. He loved being able to coach his son Sean and daughter Amber in their sports and never missed a game.

John married the love of his life, Kristi Sprague on July 3, 1982. His proudest family moments were “Anytime I got a hug, smile or kiss from my children and grandchildren.”

John was preceded in death by his fathers, Andrew West and Bob Morrison; granddaughter Jessica West; and best friend Wayne Martin of the Norman Police Department.

He is survived by his loving wife of 32 years, Kristi West; mother, Virginia Barkley Morrison; children David McFarlain and wife Kristina, Sean P. West and wife Shelly and Amber West-Akerman and husband Mark; sister Nedra Burton and husband Ron; brother Dennis Morrison of California; grandchildren Bill West, Alex York, Wyatt York, Collin Columbus, Presly West, Mavrik Akerman, Audra Akerman and Andy.
