Paul S. McMillian

NORMAN — Paul S. McMillian was born to Joe and Ella (Sherwood) McMillian on August 11, 1929 in Tulsa. He departed this life March 20 at his home in Lexington at the age of 84 years.

Mr. McMillian attended school in Tulsa. He then became employed with Royal Typewriter Co. as a shipping clerk until Oct. 27, 1947, when he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was sent to USNTC, San Diego, Ca. and received the rank of E3. In 1948, Mr. McMillian was transferred to Port Hueneme, Ca. to U.S. Navy School for Technical Training Course of Electrical Construction and received the assignment of a Communication Lineman. He then saw six months of Foreign War Service. He received orders to report to the U.S. Naval Amphibious Base in Coronado, Ca., where he spent the next six years serving his country.

On April 4, 1952, he was detached from his unit and received orders to report to the Naval Air Technical Training Center in Norman for shore duty. He was granted permission to travel to Norman in his personal car, a 1941 Oldsmobile with $98.00 pay. On March 31, 1954, Mr. McMillian opted out of the U.S. Navy.

While stationed at the Norman Naval Base, he met Donna June Calvert. On Feb. 14th, 1955, he and Miss Calvert were united in marriage in Las Vegas, Nevada. They made their home in Norman before moving to the Noble and Lexington area and resided on their acreage in Lexington until both of their deaths. Mrs. McMillian lost her life in a tragic auto accident July 26, 2008, and Mr. McMillian remained on the same acreage until his death which made a total of 45 years in the Noble and Lexington area.

Mr. McMillian was a self-employed bricklayer by trade until his retirement. He had previously been employed with the city of Norman and the University of Oklahoma Physical Plant. They loved to travel, hunt and fish extensively with his sister-in-law and her husband Corky, and Esther Bryant. He enjoyed collecting coins, playing a few slot machines when they traveled close to a casino, helping his wife with ceramics and woodworking. He also was a member of the Country Sunrise Band.
