Wesley Don Key

NORMAN — Wesley Don Key, 77, died Sunday, Sept. 15, 2013, in Norman. He was born Aug. 5, 1936, in Norman to Jesse Horace and Willie Marie (Hamil) Key. He lived in Norman most of his life, graduating from Norman’s University High School in 1956.

After briefly attending the University of Oklahoma and working for local businesses, he began his career as a licensed aircraft mechanic at Tinker Air Force Base, for which he received awards and commendations. This position took him on frequent TDY trips around the country and overseas. Following his retirement from Tinker AFB, he continued his line of work with a variety of private contractors, also working for some time in Guam. He served in the Oklahoma National Guard and was a member of the local Moose Lodge.

Wesley’s life-long interests included restoring cars, ballroom dancing, OU football and basketball, and travel. His childhood summers in Manchester, Texas, at the family place were among his fondest memories, and he continued to return there throughout his life. He was deeply interested in his children and grandchildren’s activities and attended events that they were involved in whenever he could. He was known for his great sense of humor and generosity.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother and his wife, Vernon and Bobbie Jean Key of Norman; and sister, Dorothy Jean Key Womack of Lubbock, Texas.

Wes is survived by his wife of 28 years, Judith Coker of the home; daughter, Sheilah Key Hames and her husband David of Houston; son, Greg Key and his wife Nadine of Norman; grandchildren Lauren Hames Pierce, Zachary Hames, Hollie Key and Dustin Key. He is also survived by stepson, Marc Coker and wife Anastasia of Bend, Ore.; stepdaughter, Katherine McRae and husband Jerry of Norman; and stepgrandchildren Cameron Coker, Margaret Vittitow and Emily Vittitow. Survivors also include great-grandchildren and several cousins, nieces, nephews and extended family members and numerous friends.

Gifts in his memory may be sent to the Veterans Corner Benevolence Fund of Goldsby, P.O. Box 704, Washington, OK 73093; or the National Alzheimer’s Association.

A graveside service will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at IOOF Cemetery in Norman.

Arrangements for Wesley and his family were placed in the care of the Vice family at Havenbrook Funeral Home in Norman.
