NORMAN — Major James R. Flood (USAF retired), 93, passed away Monday, Sept. 23, 2013, at Air Force Village 1 Retirement Center (AFV 1) in San Antonio. Jim was born Feb. 5, 1920, in Drumwright, the son of Ray Flood and Edith Lyle Flood of Norman, who preceded him in death. He married Pauline G. Malloy of Eufaula in Stephens County, Georgia on May 29, 1943. Pauline also preceded him in death in 1985.
Jim was a graduate of Norman High School and a student at the University of Oklahoma when, at the age of 21, he entered the U.S. Army for active duty and eventually for service in World War II. During his 24-year military career, he served in the Oklahoma National Guard, the U.S. Army Airborne, U.S. Army Air Corps and U.S. Air Force as infantryman, paratrooper, pilot, meteorologist and security/intelligence officer. The last half of his military career was spent in the Air Force Security Service, which he proudly served, never discussed and where he made a lifetime of friends. He especially held the USAF 6913th Security Group in his fondest memories. Jim returned from the Air Force at Ft. Meade, Md. in 1962.
Upon his military retirement, the Flood family returned to Norman, where Jim engaged in several businesses, most notably real estate sales and appraisals. Jim and Pauline were members of the First Christian Church. In 1989, he fully retired and moved to AFV 1.
He is survived by his daughter, Kathryn L. Flood; his son, James R. Flood II, both of Norman; granddaughter, Beverly E. Flood and husband Jake Bailey of Minneapolis; grandson, Steven R. Flood and wife Jennifer Holberg and great-granddaughter, Lilia P. Flood of Austin, Texas.
Arrangements for Jim and his family were placed in the care of the Porter Loring Mortuary in San Antonio, Texas. A memorial service for James R. Flood will be 6:30 p.m. today at the AFV 1 chapel in San Antonio, Texas.
