Maxine Louise Mohr

NORMAN — Maxine Louise Mohr, of Creston, Iowa, passed away Friday, Oct. 4, 2013, at the age of 90 in the home of her daughter in Avon, Ohio.

Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Powers Funeral Home, junction of highways 34 and 25 in Creston, Iowa. The Rev. Gideon Gallo and the Rev. Tom Woodin will officiate.

Burial will be at the Graceland Cemetery, south of Creston, Iowa.

Open visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today, with family receiving friends from 6 to 8 p.m. at Powers Funeral Home.

Memorials may be directed to the First United Methodist Church of Creston, Iowa, and the Arispe United Methodist Church.

Maxine Louise Mohr was born in Decatur County, Iowa, on Aug. 15, 1923, to Charlie and Ruth (Bullock) Fesler. She attended Arispe schools, where she was a member of the high school basketball team. She married her husband, Hollis Mohr, in Grant City, Mo., in 1941. Together, they had seven children. She had positions as cook and manager of the school lunch programs in Cromwell, Creston Junior High and Franklin Elementary. Hollis died in December 2004.

Maxine was a member of the Arispe Methodist Church and Creston First Methodist Church and was past president of the Women’s Society of Christian Service for the southwest district of Iowa.

Maxine was preceded in death by her parents; Hollis, her husband of 62 years; a son, William Charles and his wife Beverly; a daughter, Betty Jo Troyer; and a sister, Hazel Sweet.

She is survived by four daughters, Ellen Mohr of Norman, Barbara Archibold of Thorton, Colo., Debra (Wilberto) Torres of Avon, Ohio, formerly a Norman resident, as director of the Norman Housing Authority and also director of the Oklahoma City HUD Public Housing, and Julie (Gary) Honeick of Ames, Iowa; a son, Stanley (Jean) Mohr of Creston, Iowa; 14 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; a sister, Wanda Garrett of Anchorage, Alaska; two sisters-in-law, Jessie Mohr of Gowrie, Iowa, and Margaret “Peggy” Skarda of Mt. Ayr, Iowa; and other relatives and friends.
