Norene L. Burgess

NORMAN — Norene L. Burgess, 97, of Norman, passed away Thursday, April 3, 2014, in Norman. She was born Jan. 25, 1917, in Lamar, Mo., to Holton Thomas and Inez Ethel (Cox) Lucas.

Norene graduated from Lamar High School where she excelled in all her classes, especially algebra which was her favorite subject, and played the violin in the orchestra. She attended the Kansas City Cosmetology School and during WWII was a beautician in the Will Rogers Hotel in Claremore, where she met and married Charles Burgess on March 30, 1941. They were married 19 days short of 65 years.

After Charles came home from the service, she retired and his occupation took them to many parts of the country and to Venezuela. They later moved to Pawhuska, where they lived for over 57 years. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church. After Charles’ retirement, they traveled in their motor home touring the 48 states, Canada and Nova Scotia.

Norene’s hobbies included cooking, sewing and knitting. She enjoyed hosting and preparing holiday dinners for over 50 members of the extended family; preparing and chaperoning social events for high school friends of her children; cook outs at their boathouse on Bluestem Lake; designing and making clothes for Susan and later her granddaughter and great-granddaughters; and she quilted and knitted up until a few months before her death.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Burgess; her parents; her brothers, Gayle and Max Lucas; her sister, Geneva Lucas Monroe; and her dear friend and beloved companion, Anton Foyt.

Norene is survived by her daughter, Susan Raley and her husband Jeff of Norman; her son, Sam Burgess; her grandchildren, Lance Raley and wife Lana of Dallas and Lori Ramler and husband Steve of Norman; and three great-grandchildren, Haley Smith, Annabelle Raley and Charles Beauregard “Beau” Raley.

Her family thanks and appreciates the care she was given by her friends and caregivers at Lifecare Oklahoma Home Health and especially her nurse of over 5 years, Molly Ross.
