NORMAN — Dr. James M. Gray, 74, longtime Grove resident, died Saturday, April 12, 2014, with his family by his side.
He was born Sept. 9, 1939, to Wilbur William and Elta Pearl Gray. He was the fifth of six children. After graduating from Grove High School in 1957, he earned degrees from NEO, Pittsburg State College and his Doctorate of Education from the University of Arkansas in 1970.
James began his career teaching math in Liberty, Mo., and Shawnee Mission, Kan., before accepting his first principal position in Fairview, Kan., where he met the love of his life and partner, Kay. They married in January 1965, of which three children were born, who eventually gave them seven grandchildren. James advanced through the education field and eventually served as superintendent of Topeka, Kan., schools and Norman schools, retiring to Grove in 1997.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Charles and Daryl.
James leaves many loving memories with his family, wife, Kay; daughter, Jennifer K. Ellis; sons Matthew A. Gray and Will B. Gray; seven grandchildren, Madisyn, Jackson, Emma, Grant Henry, Harrison, Davis and Amelia; brothers Ted and Arden Gray; sister, Dena Hilliard; and many other loving relatives and a host of friends.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Worley-Luginbuel Funeral Home, 711 S. Main in Grove.
Services will be 2 p.m. Friday at Grace Presbyterian Church, 400 S. Main in Grove.
Arrangements are entrusted to Worley-Luginbuel Funeral Home in Grove.
