NORMAN — Mildred L. Christian, age 80, of Purcell, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2012. Mildred Louise Burns was born Sept. 25, 1932, in Washington, the baby of five children born to William Mark Burns and Minnie Maude (Hibbard) Burns.

Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at the Union Hill Baptist Church. Burial will follow at the Washington Cemetery.

She grew up on the family farm in the Washington Community and attended Washington Schools, graduating in 1950. While in high school, she lettered in basketball. She married her true love, a young man from Purcell named Glen Edward Christian, on Sept. 2, 1951, at First Baptist Church in Washington. They made their home in Purcell, where together they raised three children: daughter, LuGlena, and sons Tony and Scott. Mildred was very active in her children’s lives. In 1972, she was voted Purcell Mother of the Year.

Mildred served as 4-H leader for more than 45 years, earning her the Lifetime Achievement Award. She worked side by side with Glen on the farm, and she loved cooking for the cotton and broomcorn hands. She found great joy in being a homemaker, caring and providing for her family. She was a loving wife and mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt and friend.

Mildred loved the Lord and served him faithfully. She was a charter member of the Union Hill Baptist Church, where she played the piano. She was instrumental in starting the church choir and enjoyed cooking for the Baptist preachers and church get-togethers. She will be remembered for her famous chocolate and coconut crème pies. Mildred loved traveling, and she and Glen looked forward to trips with their life-long family friends, Bill and Velma Bacon.

She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Minnie Burns; sister, Daisy Rae Price; and three brothers, Delton Burns (an infant), Willie Lee Burns and Hoyt Burns.
