NORMAN — Col. Robert Clark Armstrong, 76, of Norman, passed away peacefully Sunday, March 24, 2013, in Norman. Robert was born March 19, 1937, in Jacksonville, Texas, the son of Robert Curtis and Cleonna Christine (Smith) Armstrong.
Graveside services with full military honors for Col. Armstrong will be 2 p.m. Friday at Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery, 2301 E. Indian Hills Road in Norman, with Rev. Bruce Ingram officiating.
While attending Oklahoma State University in 1957, after graduating from Duncan High School, Robert enlisted in the 120th Combat Engineers, 45th Infantry Division of the Oklahoma Army National Guard. He married the love of his life, Miss Nancy Jane Petrie, on June 21, 1958, in Duncan.
Commissioned a second lieutenant in 1962, Robert received both his fixed and rotary wings at Ft. Rucker, Ala. in the mid-1960s. A soldier, aviator and leader, Robert was employed by the Oklahoma Army National Guard, serving in units located in Oklahoma City, Tulsa and Okmulgee. He was commander of the unit in Norman in the 1970s and served as chief of staff in the Army National Guard before becoming United States property and fiscal officer (USPFO) before retiring in 1997.
His love of the guard has a legacy at the 45th Infantry Division Museum in Oklahoma City, where he was influential in obtaining a number of their impressive static displays of period military equipment.
Robert received both his Bachelor of Science and Master of Science from Oklahoma State University while living in Norman. He very much enjoyed the Bedlam game in 2011.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Survivors include his wife of nearly 55 years, Nancy Armstrong of Norman; two sons, Richard Keith Armstrong and his wife, Mary-Margaret of Kansas City, Mo., and David Kelly Armstrong and his girlfriend Lisa Northcott of Norman; four grandchildren, Daniel Robert Armstrong of Norman, Bradford Shaw Armstrong of Los Angeles, Megan Elizabeth Armstrong of Kansas City, Mo., and Sarah Michelle Armstrong of Kansas City, Mo.; and three great-grandchildren, Chloe’ Bella Marie Armstrong of Oklahoma City, Audrey Cleonna Armstrong of Kansas City, Mo., and Tavin Emmitt Lewis, of Kansas City, Mo.
The Armstrong family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Havenbrook Funeral Home, 3401 Havenbrook St. in Norman.

Arrangements for Col. Armstrong and his family were placed in the care of the Vice family at the Havenbrook Funeral Home in Norman.
