Martha Ellen (McSperitt) Hurst

NORMAN — Martha Ellen (McSperitt) Hurst, 93, of Norman, passed away on Thursday, Sept. 12, 2013, in Norman. Services will be 2 p.m. Friday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1506 W. Imhoff Road, in Norman. Interment will follow at the Norman IOOF Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday at Primrose Funeral Service.

Mrs. Hurst was born April 1, 1920, in Stigler, to Frank and Emma (Pinion) McSperitt. She married Edgar Hurst on Dec. 26, 1939, in Fort Smith, Ark. Together, the two moved for a while to California and then Arizona before returning to settle in Oklahoma in 1965.

The family remembers her being like a kid; she liked opening presents, laughed at silly things, and loved unconditionally. Nothing was more important to her than family, and through the years her family grew to include a large number of people welcomed into the fold, regardless of their actual relation.

Holidays were always special at Martha’s house, and though her home was modest, she always made sure everyone had a place at the table. Somewhere along the way, she became famous for her homemade holiday dressing, and even once the family gatherings had transitioned to other homes, she could always be counted on to make that dish.

She could also always be counted on for a hug. Whenever she would greet someone she knew — and sometimes even those she didn’t — she would wrap them in a welcoming embrace. And once it was time to depart, the embrace became a farewell, a hug for the road, with the often-spoken words “I love you” to send you on your way.

Martha was preceded in death by her husband, her parents and siblings, and five children.

She is survived by two sons, James and Louis, and one daughter, Linda. She is also survived by numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and a large extended family.

Services are entrusted to Primrose Funeral Service. For more information on the services or to sign the guest book, please visit primrosefuneralservice.com.
