Myrtle Harris

NORMAN — Myrtle Harris, 98, of Norman, passed away Friday, March 22, 2013 at Norman Regional Hospital. Myrtle was born Dec. 22, 1914 in Newcastle. She was the second child of six children born to Decator Elmer Birden and Venie Lee (Ketner).

Services are 2 p.m. Monday at Wilson-Little Funeral Home Chapel in Purcell. Interment will be at the Noble IOOF Cemetery.

Myrtle grew up a farm girl living in the Newcastle community. She attended school in Newcastle and later met and married John C. Harris. They were married on April 1, 1936 and made their first home in Newcastle.

Years later, John found work in the oil field and for many years Myrtle traveled with him as he worked throughout the U. S. In the early 1960s they moved to Norman and started their own business called “Harris Implement” selling and servicing farm equipment. Together they operated the business for nearly 30 years on Robinson Street in Norman before retiring.

Myrtle was a member of Brookhaven Baptist Church in Norman. Throughout her life she enjoyed working in her yard and flower garden. She also enjoyed sewing and was especially gifted at sewing drapes and curtains.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Elmer and Venie Birden; husband, John Harris in 1995; two sisters, Nola Cheatham and Oleta Wilson; and two brothers, Jesse Birden and Lawrence “Bud” Birden.

She is survived by her sister, Wanda Alexander of Norman; two nieces, Teresa Welch of Long Grove and Susan Birden of New York; two nephews, Rick Wilson of Blanchard and Larry Birden of Jones; and many great and great-great nieces and nephews.
