NORMAN — Carl Cyril Smith, 87, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2013, in Norman. Carl was born May 18, 1926, in Bowlegs, to Ruth and Marion “Jeff” Smith. He was raised in Norman. On July 15, 1950, he married Fern Beebe in Ponca City. They were married 50 years.
In World War II, Carl served in the Pacific theater as a U.S. Navy gunner’s mate aboard the USS Colbert.
As a master gas mechanic, Carl worked on Titan I and II, Atlas and Minuteman before he settled in Titusville, Fla., in 1966. At the Kennedy Space Center he worked on Gemini, Apollo (including the Apollo 11 moon shot), Skylab and Space Shuttle missions before his retirement in 1992.
Carl was a deacon at Westside Baptist Church in Titusville, leading nursing home ministries. After his wife Fern was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, he cared for her for t12 years. She died in their home.
After her death in 2001, he led Alzheimer’s support groups and accompanied the Southern Baptist Rapid Response Team to disaster sites.
He is survived by three brothers, Drate of Norman, Norris of Edmond and Ross of South Carolina; four children, David of Claremore, and Karleene, Brent and Daylin all of Norman; and five grandchildren, Susan Lackey Parker of Houston and Jennifer Smith, David “Zack” Smith, Samuel Smith and Alexandra Smith all of Norman.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial donations be sent to a local charity.
