Eugene ‘Gene’ H. Barker

NORMAN — Eugene “Gene” H. Barker was born July 14, 1924, to William and Frances (Hoffman) Barker in Sheridan, Wyo. He died Thursday, June 12, 2014, in St Maries, Idaho.

He was raised in Wyoming and, prior to World War II, worked at several jobs throughout the Northwest. After Pearl Harbor, Gene enlisted in the U.S. Army and served as a medic in the Pacific Theater until the end of the war. He was discharged in 1946 and returned home to Sheridan, where he met and married Edith Erickson, R.N. He graduated from Denver University in 1950. He was recalled to active duty and served during the Korean War.

Lt. Barker was separated from active service in 1954. He worked for several government agencies: the U.S. Army at Hanford Wash., NASA at Brooks Medical Center in San Antonio, FAA in Oklahoma City and USPS Training Center in Norman.

Gene and Edith retired to St. Maries, Idaho, in 1975.

Gene was preceded in death by his daughters Vicki Sue (1949) and Edith (2004).

Eugene is survived by his sons William Barker of Helena, Mont., David Barker of St. Maries, Idaho, and Mark and wife Joan Barker of Norman.

He was a member of St. Maries American Legion Post No. 25, of St. Maries.

Graveside services were 11 a.m. June 18 at Woodlawn Cemetery, St. Maries, Idaho, with Deacon Floyd Turner officiating. Military honors were rendered.

The family suggests memorials be made to the St. Maries American Legion Post No. 25, P.O. Box 234, St. Maries, ID 83861.
