NORMAN — Waynel Hiner Cook was born June 23, 1929, and passed from this life Thursday, July 10, 2014. She was born in Kiowa County on the family place, to Wayman and Gladys Hiner. She was born alongside her twin brother, Wayman Jr., who didn’t survive infancy. Joyfully, her sister, Sandy Hiner Homer, was born five years later.
She was educated at Cleveland Elementary, Taft Junior High and Classen High School in Oklahoma City. After high school, she attended the University of Oklahoma, where she was a member of Alpha Delta Pi. Upon graduation, she received a Bachelor of Arts in music education. She later received a master’s degree in special education from the University of Central Oklahoma. She taught at all levels of education, including supervising student teachers at the University of Central Oklahoma until her late 70s.
Waynel is survived by her sister and brother-in-law, Sandy and Ed Homer; children Jim Cook and his wife Sveta, Janet Corley and her husband Steve and Barbara Swinton and her husband Charlie; grandchildren Brittany and Drew Melton, Michael and Trish Corley, Kyle and Beth Corley, Kelly Corley, Caitlin and Kevin Fore, Taylor Swinton and Jenny Swinton; and great-grandson, Lane Corley.
Her joys in life were her family, including her “favorite grandchild” — all of them. In addition, she also loved her church, her friends, music and OU sporting events. She enjoyed games of all sorts but especially bridge, mahjong and Rummy Cube.
A special thanks to her close friends Amanda Nichols and Margaret Horany for their loving support and companionship. The family would like to thank her doctors Dr. Dustin Buckley, Dr. Christopher Kerns and Dr. Radhika Medipalli for their coordinated efforts for quality health care. She passed peacefully from this life to the next while surrounded by her loving family.
Memorial donations may be sent to the Spring Creek Baptist Church, 11701 N. MacArthur Blvd., Oklahoma City, OK 73162 or Special Olympics Oklahoma, 6835 S. Canton Ave., Tulsa, OK 74136.
