NORMAN — It is with gratitude to God for a life well served that the family of Gladys Fehintola Martens Somade, 92, announces her death Thursday, July 11, 2013, at her home in Yaba, Lagos, Nigeria.
Mama, as she was called by all who knew her, was born March 26, 1921, in Lagos, Nigeria, to Frances Sianbola (Scott) and George Nicholas Martins. They preceded her in death, as did her siblings Mrs. Sulola Abayomi and Mr. Pehinde Martins. She also was preceded in death by her grandson, Seyi Somade.
Mama graduated from Methodist Girls High School in Lagos. In 1945, she attended the Singer Sewing School in London, where she developed a life-long love of textiles and fashion. She designed fabrics that would then be made into beautiful attires for her friends and family.
On Dec. 19, 1946, she married Chief H.M.B. Somade of Abeokuta, Nigeria. He preceded her in death after 34 years of marriage. In 1947, Mama pursued a degree from the Western Region of Nigeria School of Nursing, graduating with a senior Registered Nurse degree. She rose to the rank of chief matron of the military hospital in Lagos during the Civil War in the 1960s.
Mama was a woman of deep faith who started and ended each day with a song of prayer. A life-long member of All Saints Anglican Church in Lagos, she was often called upon to help others. She was always ready to tend to their physical or spiritual needs in a moment’s notice. Friends and family were always welcomed in her home and her cooking was legendary.
She is survived by her children Dr. Jide and Dupe Somade, Ms. Sola Somade and Mr. Dupe Somade, all of Lagos, Mr. Femi and Patty Somade of Norman and Ms. Agbeke and William Ballantyne of Lagos; her grandchildren Kunle, Ayo, Dare and Bunmi Somade of Lagos, Tunde, Dekunle and Bola Somade of Silver Springs, Md., Sola Somade of Norman and Adie Ballantyne of Lagos; and great-grandson, Anuoluwapo Somade, also of Lagos.
Funeral services will be Aug. 26 at All Saints Anglican Church, Lagos, Nigeria.
