Barbara Gayle Sparkman

NORMAN — Barbara Gayle Sparkman, 59, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family at her home Nov. 20 in Norman.

She was born Oct. 11, 1954 in Glasgow, Kentucky to Hollan Thomas and Gladys Ray Sexton. Barbara married Mike Sparkman on Dec. 30, 1977 in Stillwater and they raised two sons, Matthew and Joseph.

Barbara was a Registered Dietitian and Program Director for the Oklahoma County Senior Nutrition Program, retiring after 40 years of service in 2012. She loved cooking for her family, reading books and gardening. Barbara was also known for making sure everyone ate plenty of food while relaxing by the pool and being the “lady that runs this place”. She will be remembered by her family as a strong-willed and loving person.

Barbara is preceded in death by her parents.

She is survived by her husband of 35 years, Mike Sparkman of the home; two sons, Matthew and wife Deane of Norman and Joseph and wife Megn of Norman; two brothers, Garry Sexton and wife Teresa of Glasgow, Kentucky, Jeffery Sexton and wife Darlene of Smiths Grove, Kentucky; five grandchildren, Chase, Sylas, Jaxon, Gray, and Boyd; and a host of family and friends.

Memorial contributions may be made inmemory of Barbara Sparkman to Susan G. Komen for the Cure, 115 Park Avenue, Oklahoma City, OK 73102. Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 26 at the Havenbrook Funeral Home Chapel, 3401 Havenbrook Street in Norman.
