NORMAN — Johnnye Raye Jenner, 77, passed away Sunday, June 16, 2013. Johnnye was born Aug. 6, 1934, in Agawam to educators Floyd and Margaret Hubbard.
A life-long learner, Johnnye earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education and was a voracious reader. Family, friends, 22 years of elementary school students and visitors to Sam Noble Museum of Natural History benefited from her breadth of knowledge and insight.
Emotionally empathetic, socially conscious and politically engaged, Johnnye participated in the early equal rights movement, organized for the League of Women Voters, advocated for children through the Court Appointed Special Advocate Association, volunteered with American Red Cross disaster relief teams from Oklahoma to Puerto Rico and served as elder in the Presbyterian Church.
A devoted mother and matriarch, her door was always open and her pantry was never bare.
Johnnye is survived by daughter, Amy Birdwell and husband David; son, Kean Jenner and wife Nancy; daughter, Laura Jenner and partner Kim; sister, Janna DeMarta and husband Lee; sister, Judy Liscano; eight grandchildren; and many wonderful nieces and nephews.
We pray that her eternity abounds in the music of Heaven and unending joy.
