John Raymond ‘Ray’ Cobb

NORMAN — John Raymond “Ray” Cobb was a life of excellence. Born Aug. 3, 1927, in Norman, passed away March 19, 2014, in Los Gatos, Calif., where he had been a vital part of the community for over 50 years.

He leaves his wife of 62 years, Charley Ann, and their two sons, Randy and Brad. He also has two grandsons, Jonathan and Nathanael, who live in England with their parents Brad and Leanne. He has two brothers, Fred and Jim of Oklahoma and a sister Nancy of Colorado.

Ray graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a degree in architecture, and he served in the Navy on Guam where he developed a passion for scuba diving just as the sport was being invented.

Coming home to the states, Ray began his architectural career in San Diego, then moved to the Los Gratos area to design and build a custom home for another Naval officer he met on Guam. He loved the area so much that he never left.

Ray was very involved with the community, especially the Los Gratos Rotary where he presided as president and achieved the Paul Harris Award. He was an active member of the Los Gatos United Methodist Church during the entire time he lived in Los Gratos. In addition to participating in countless church service functions, he built many strong friendships there. With all the friends he made in these organizations and elsewhere, Ray had a full calendar of tennis, hiking, backpacking, biking and Stanford football games to name a few.

His motto was “It’s a great day to be alive,” which he stated every morning and he truly lived his life that way, sharing that joy and warmth with all he came in contact with. He will be greatly missed by family, friends and the community.

Services will be 2 p.m. April 27 at the Los Gatos Methodist church with a reception immediately following in the social hall. In lieu of flowers, contributions to the Los Gatos Rotary or Los Gatos United Methodist Church would be greatly appreciated.
