NORMAN — Margery Ann Pieper Bede was born April 29, 1926, in St. Paul, Minn. She was called to her eternal home on Mother’s Day, May 11, 2014, in Norman. It is fitting that she was called home on this day, as she was the ultimate example of a loving, caring and serving mother to her family and all those whom she touched. She was 88 years old.
Margery graduated from University High School and in 1948, from the University of Minnesota with a B.S. degree in elementary education, which is where she met Thomas Bede. Margery and Thomas were married June 18, 1948.
Before taking time off to raise a family, Margery was an elementary school teacher in Minneapolis. After settling in Edina, Minn., Margery worked part-time as a substitute teacher. In 1973, the family moved to Norman. Several years later, Tom’s work transferred him to Michigan and the family moved to Frankenmuth, Mich., but they returned to Norman in the mid-1980s. Margery also was a substitute teacher for Norman Public Schools in special education classes. Margery loved children. She had an in-home daycare caring for her grandchildren, along with a number of other children.
Margery had many friends wherever she lived. She also enjoyed a variety of activities and interests, including teaching Sunday School, playing bridge, care ministry, needlework, crafts, swimming with the Silver Foxes and anything that involved family. She was an amazing cook and enjoyed preparing Sunday dinner for any of the family members that could come.
Margery was preceded in death by her loving husband of 53 years, Thomas F. Bede; her son, Peter A. Bede; granddaughter, Jacqueline M. Bede; and older brother, Roy Pieper Jr.
She is survived by two children, Steven Bede of Sandstone, Minn., and Susan Bede Favors and husband Stephen of Norman; daughter-in-law, Sandy Smith Bede of Warren, Mich.; five grandchildren, Jason, Zachary and Emily Favors of Norman, Jaimie Bede Minko and husband Mike of East Pointe, Mich., and Joshua Bede and Micaela Berlin of Kalamazoo, Mich.; and three great-grandchildren, Andre and Devon Favors and Elizabeth Bede. Margery’s younger sister, Jean Flaaten and husband Norman, reside in Hot Springs Village, Ark.
