NORMAN — Jeanne O. Cullen, 90, of Norman, died Tuesday, May 13, 2014, in Webster, Texas. She had recently moved to Texas to be closer to her daughter and was surrounded by family when she died. Mrs. Cullen was born May 26, 1923, in Ishpeming, Mich., to Jean Alfred and Mary Belle Brazil Beaudin.
She attended school in Ishpeming, graduating as salutatorian of Ishpeming High School in 1940. She attended Northern Michigan University, graduating with her B.A. in education in 1944. After beginning her teaching career in Menominee, Mich., as a kindergarten teacher, she moved to Ann Arbor, Mich., after WWII. She earned her master’s degree in education from the University of Michigan in 1948 and continued her teaching career.
On Dec. 29, 1951, Jeanne married Robert E. Cullen, a research professor at the University of Michigan. The Cullen’s lived in Ann Arbor and Seattle before moving to Norman in 1969. After raising her two children, Jeanne returned to her teaching career, retiring from Norman Public Schools in 1987 after a 25-year career.
Mrs. Cullen spent many years enjoying her family. Bob and Jeanne were lifetime members of the University of Michigan Alumni Association and enjoyed watching Michigan and Oklahoma football. They traveled to Ireland in 1985 and spent many trips visiting Jeanne’s sisters, Mary Belle McKeown of Loveland, Colo., and Elizabeth Stringer in Dallas and Ann Arbor.
Jeanne has been a member of St. Thomas More Parish for 45 years, actively participating in many activities, including preparing the church for Mass and assisting with classes and activities.
Jeanne was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Robert E. Cullen; her sister, Mary Elizabeth Stringer; her brother-in-law, Deacon John McKeown; and a great-nephew, J. Bart Betow.
Mrs. Cullen is survived by her son, Michael J. Cullen of Norman; one daughter, Maureen Cullen and husband Chris Grout of Seabrook, Texas; one sister, Mary Belle McKeown of Loveland, Colo.; two grandchildren, Tiffany Rivers and Meghan Grout; one great-grandson, Elijah Rivers; four nieces, Kathy McKeown, Pat Lovato, Margaret McKeown Kelly and Mary Katherine Stringer; one nephew, Timothy McKeown; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.
