NORMAN — Melvina Marie Johnson Jackson, 74, passed from this life Monday, April 15, 2013, at her home in Noble surrounded by her family and friends singing her favorite hymns. She was born to Calvin Louis Johnson and Ruth Marie Johnson on Sept. 24, 1938.

Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Lakeside Church of God in Norman, officiated by Rev. Brian Wade and Rev. Kenneth Adams. Interment will follow at Fairview Maguire Cemetery in Noble under the direction of McMahan’s Funeral Home.

Her father passed away when Melvina was a child and her mother later married Russell Conkling, who raised her as his own.

Melvina married A. Z. Jackson on Jan. 8, 1962, in Norman. They celebrated 51 years of marriage in 2013. Melvina and A. Z. were a military family that lived in various places, but Noble was always home and they returned there to live in 1996.

Melvina enjoyed cooking, traveling, playing piano and singing at church, being a TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) leader, where she accomplished her weight loss goal and earned the title of 2012 Oklahoma TOPS Queen.

She especially loved spending time with her children and grandchildren.

Preceding her in death were her parents; brothers Donald Johnson and Ronnie Johnson; and brothers-in-law Larry Bryan and Joe Grimes.

She is survived by four sons, David and Carrie Jackson of Mannford, Boyd and Cheri Jackson of Centreville, Va., Allen and Tami Jackson of Cookeville, Tenn., and Scott Jackson of Norman; one daughter, Bonnie and Steve Hancock of Fayetteville, Ga.; grandchildren Aaron, Ethan and Adam Jackson and Colby John Benzler, William, Kate and Laura Jackson, Ally, Aidan and Liberty Jackson, Jake and Hannah Hancock and adopted family Randy, Christy, Valerie and Christian Howell; brothers Cecil and Joyce Johnson of Norman, Ralph and Celesta Conkling of Noble, Jeanette Bryen of Noble and Maurine Grimes of Maysville; many nieces and nephews and her Lakeside Church of God family.

Visitation will be 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. today. The family will be present from 5 to 7 p.m. to receive friends at McMahan’s Funeral Home in Noble.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Lima-Peru Orphanage Project, In Memory of Melvina Jackson, c/o Lakeside Church of God, 3300 E. Alameda St., Norman, OK 73071.
