NORMAN — Pastor Martin L. Mappes, 87 years of age, died Monday, Aug. 19, 2013, at Floyd Memorial Hospital in New Albany. He was born Feb. 23, 1926, in Norman to his late parents, Henry and Wilhelmina Hansmeyer Mappes.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He attended St. John’s College in Winfield, Kan., and graduated from the Concordia Seminary in St. Louis, Mo., in 1954. His dedicated vocation as a Lutheran pastor for 60 years included St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Topeka, Kan., Trinity Lutheran Church in Ramona, Kan., Trinity Lutheran Church in Hoyleton, Ill., Trinity Lutheran Church in Salina, Kan., Christus Victor Lutheran Church in Knoxville, Tenn., and lastly Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church in Georgetown, Ind., where he served from 1976 through his retirement in 1989. Pastor Mappes was most recently a member of the Grace Lutheran Church in New Albany, Ind.
Pastor Mappes was preceded in death by two grandchildren, Liesha and Katlyn.
We celebrate Martin’s strong and abiding faith in God, his deep love of family, his generosity to others and his faithful service to the flock that he shepherded.
Survivors include his wife of 49 years, the former Doris M. Awe; children Brian Mappes (Lisa), Teresa Brown (Don) and Marty Mappes (Gina); siblings Elsie (Hank), Arlene, Pauline (Roy), Dorothy, Mary Margaret, Wilma (George), Nancy and Carolyn; and 13 grandchildren, Zachary, Heidi (Kevin), Sara, Ryan, Carter, Lauren (Jason), Jordyn, Cameron, Joshua, Samendia, Eva, Jefferson and Zyf.
Visitation will be from 4 to 5 p.m. Tuesday, with funeral services at 5 p.m. in Havenbrook Funeral Home chapel.
Graveside services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at IOOF Cemetery in Norman.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to “Jesus in Lord,” “Kids Against Hunger” or hte Indiana District LWML Scholarship Fund for Church Workers. Checks should be made payable to Grace Lutheran Church and designated for the appropriate memorial.
Arrangements for Pastor Mappes and his family were placed in the care of the Vice family at Havenbrook Funeral Home in Norman.
