Betty Ray Hobbs

NORMAN — Betty Hobbs, 86, a long-time resident of Norman, died at her home on Saturday, Aug. 24, 2013.

Betty Jean Ray was born in Cordell on Oct. 26, 1926, the eldest daughter of Otis Leon Ray and Mildred Grant Ray.

She graduated from Cordell High School in 1945, where she was a gifted athlete and three-year starter on the basketball team.

Following high school, she worked until her marriage at Antrim Lumber Company and Oklahoma Natural Gas.

On Aug. 26, 1948, she married Dan S. Hobbs, and their marriage lasted until her death. Along with her husband, she attended Oklahoma Panhandle State University during the late 1940s at Goodwell. She was the mother of five children, 12 grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

In 1955, the Hobbs’ moved to Norman, where Betty spent the remainder of her life. She was a full-time mother and housewife.

A member of First Baptist Church, she was a deacon and served as secretary of the nursery division for more than four decades. In 2004, she joined NorthHaven Church in Norman, where she remained until her death.

She was predeceased by her fraternal and maternal grandparents and her parents.

She is survived by her husband Dan, of the home, and by her sister and brother-in-law, Margaret Ray Slaton and Leo Slaton, of Austin, Texas. Her children, all of whom are living, are Steve Hobbs of Sapulpa; Dr. Catherine Hobbs (Mark Mills) of Norman; Bruce Hank Hobbs of Oklahoma City; Jeanne Hobbs Rogers and her husband Charles Rogers of St. Louis; and Susan Hobbs Cessna and her husband Clayton Cessna of North Canton, Ohio.

Her grandchildren include Kevin Hobbs (Penny) of Norman, Nathan Hobbs (Melissa) of Oklahoma City and Valerie Hobbs of Denton, Texas. Others are Amanda Mosure (Chris), Ellen Barry, Calley Cessna, and Audrey Cessna of North Canton, Ohio; Jordan Rogers, Grant Rogers and Rachel Rogers of St. Louis; and Hunter and Skyler Hobbs of Edmond. There are also three great-grandchildren, Woodrow Xavier Hobbs of St. Paul, Minn., Parker June Hobbs of Norman and Alexander Dean Hobbs of Oklahoma City. Also surviving are numerous brothers and sisters-in-law, many nieces and nephews, and a myriad of fellow parishioners and friends.

Memorials may be made to the NorthHaven Church Nursery and the American Cancer Society. Family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Havenbrook Funeral Home, 3401 Havenbrook St. in Norman.

Funeral services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Wednesday at NorthHaven Church, 4600 36th Ave. N.W., Norman, with Dr. Lavonn Brown and Dr. Mitch Randall officiating, under the direction of Havenbrook Funeral Home.
