NORMAN — Mr. Elmer Robert “Bob” Southard Jr., husband of Candace Lee Jones Southard, a retired master sergeant in the US Army and a senior logistics engineer with Boeing, died Saturday morning, Aug. 17, 2013, at the Veterans Victory House in Walterboro, S.C. He was 71.

Bob was born Dec. 24, 1941, in Abbeville, S.C., a son of the late Elmer Robert Southard Sr. and Evelyn Eunice Mote Southard. He received his undergraduate degree from Columbia College and later earned a master’s degree in logistical engineering. During his Army career he served two tours of duty in Vietnam, one tour in Korea and was stationed for ten years in Germany. He was a member of the Goodrich United Methodist Church in Norman, the American Legion, the VFW, the Sons of Confederate Veterans and the NRA. He was also a Shriner.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a step son, Scott Williss (Tara); three step-daughters, Elizabeth Gatewood (Tony), Patricia Rogers (Bob), and Heidi Williss, all of Norman; one brother, William E. “Bill” Southard of Walterboro, S.C.; and one sister, Claudia Southard of Clinton, S.C. Bob leaves behind a special niece and nephew, William E. Southard Jr., of Charleston, S.C. and Angela S. Winther of Mt. Pleasant, S.C. There are eleven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

A memorial service was held Friday, Aug. 23 in the Parker-Rhoden Funeral Home chapel of Walterboro, S.C.
