The first child of Christie Howard and Hilda Katrina (Meyer) Duggan, Gene was born in Gordon, Kan. on June 16, 1918. He grew up in the Oklahoma oil fields and had many happy memories of family get-togethers with aunts, uncles, and cousins in southern Kansas and northern Oklahoma.
Gene graduated from Webb City High School in 1934 and the University of Oklahoma in 1940 with a Bachelor of Science in chemical engineering. While in college, he participated in ROTC, Engineer’s Club and intramural boxing. Shortly after graduation, he joined the Army Air Corps where he attained the rank of captain.
In 1935, Gene met the love of his life, Mary Virginia Marshall, when they were next door neighbors in the Burbank Oil Field. Although it took him a year to muster the nerve to ask her out, they courted during their college years while Virginia attended the University of Central Oklahoma in Edmond. They married May 27, 1942, at Midland Texas Army Air Corps Base and enjoyed 63 years together until her death.
After leaving the Army, the couple moved to Pawhuska where Gene worked at the Skelly Oil Research Lab. In 1951, the family moved to Wichita, Kan. when he got a job at Cessna Aircraft, primarily doing metallurgical stress testing. In 1966, he went to work for the Boeing Company in Wichita, from which he retired in 1980.
