Upon retirement, they moved to Norman to be near family. Gene loved to hunt and fish, especially with his beloved brother, Don. He was an avid golfer, card player, carpenter, woodworker, and OU football fan. He loved to garden and for many years helped care for the grounds at St. Joseph Church in Norman. He and Virginia loved to travel, especially with their camper trailer.
Gene was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Virginia, and brother, Donald.
He is survived by three daughters, Mary Teresa Baer (Ted) of Norman and her sons, Christopher Allan Baer of Wichita, Kan. and Charles Phillip (Chip) Baer, Kathleen Ann (Katy) Duggan of Norman and her daughters, Lisa Marie Gaca of Huntington, W.Va., Linda Gernert of Ft. Collins, Colo., and Amy Klingenberg of Wheat Ridge, Colo., and Patricia Sue Duggan (Danny Hewett) of Overland Park, Kan. and her daughter, Allison Beth Duggan Tompkins of Oakland, Calif. and son, Kyle Andrew Duggan Tompkins of Olympia, Wash.; and one son, John Michael Duggan (Angela) of Honolulu, Hawaii and his daughter, Susan Lila Duggan of Honolulu, Hawaii; ten great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
A special thanks to the staff at Arbor House Reminisce who treated Gene like family during his time there and to Noble Health Care Center and Loving Care Home Health and Hospice which provided comfort, kindness and wonderful care during his final months.
