Maria Dolores Shield Dickinson

NORMAN — Maria Dolores Shield Dickinson, 83, was born to Gerome Wellington Shield Jr. and Vernada Payne Shield in San Angelo, Texas on Nov. 18, 1929. After studying for a time at Hollins College in Virginia, Dolores graduated with a B.A. from the University of Texas at Austin in 1951. Dolores was fluent in English and Spanish. Dolores was a student of all things Latin American. She was proud to be a fifth generation West Texan.

Dolores married the love of her life, Roy Dickinson Jr., of El Dorado, Ark., in 1952, not long after he completed his service as a bomber pilot in the Army Air Corps. Roy’s chosen profession, geology, took the couple to many locations across Texas until they settled upon Wichita Falls as the place to establish a family. They lived their lives together there until Roy’s death in 1994. Dolores moved to Norman in 1997 to be close to her grandchildren.

Roy and Dolores’ years together afforded them the opportunity to travel the world, most especially Latin America. As well, Dolores and Roy’s passion for amateur archaeology led them to numerous excavations and site surveys throughout Texas with the Texas Archaeological Society.

Dolores was an excellent mother, an accomplished artist, author, traveler, student of literature, and a keen observer of the human condition. Most of all, she had a gift for friendship and compassion.

Dolores is survived by her son, Roy Shield Dickinson and wife Elizabeth Ann Dickinson; and four beloved grandchildren; Dr. Amber Dickinson of Topeka, Kan., William, Kyle and Sean Dickinson, all of Norman. She is also survived by her beloved “beasties,” Bella Lisa and Prince Latifah.

Services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Michaels Episcopal Church, 1601 W. Imhoff Road. Burial will follow at 4 p.m. in Wichita Falls, Texas at Crestview Cemetery.

Donations may be made to a charity of your choice.

Arrangements for Dolores and her family were placed in the care of the Vice family at the Havenbrook Funeral Home of Norman. Online condolences may be shared at
