R. Kelly McElhaney

NORMAN — R. Kelly McElhaney, 54, of Norman, departed this life on Sunday, April 21, 2013, at his home surrounded by his family.

The Rosary Service for Mr. McElhaney will be 5:30 p.m. followed by the Wake Service beginning at 6 p.m. Monday at St. Thomas More University Parish, 100 Stinson Street in Norman.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Thomas More University Parish in Norman.

Kelly was born January 30, 1959, in Norman to James “J.D.” and Irma “Jeannie” (O’Neal) McElhaney. After graduation from Norman High School in 1977, he attended the University of Oklahoma for 7 years earning degrees in both Petroleum Engineering and Computer Science Engineering. During his time at OU he was a member of the Pride of Oklahoma Marching Band. Kelly’s love for OU was truly lifelong. He had been a season ticket holder for both basketball and football since he was 13 years old. He also enjoyed golfing and attending Thunder games.

Though he had a deep love for sports, there was no question that his deepest passion was for his family. He loved traveling and taking his family on vacations all over the world. Whatever his children’s interests were he was involved to help them succeed.

He coached Katie’s soccer and basketball teams growing up, and was a lifelong active member in the boy scouts.

His travels were many, but he always looked forward to his annual trip to Vegas for sports activities with his dear friend Kevin Potts. Kelly was also active in the Knights of Columbus at St. Thomas More.

He is preceded in death by his parents and his infant brother, David Gene.

Mr. McElhaney is survived by his wife, Cindy of the home; his dear children, Eamonn McElhaney and Katie McElhaney both of Norman; his siblings, Gary McElhaney and wife Julie of Victoria, Texas, Dave McElhaney and wife Lorie of Katie, Texas, and Lorie and husband David Kurjiaka of Hudsonville, Mich.; niece and nephews, Jacob, Kevin, and Kendall McElhaney; his aunts, Pat McElhaney of Norman and Jeanie O’Neal of Fresno, Calif.; as well as many cousins and friends.
