Kelly was born January 30, 1959, in Norman to James “J.D.” and Irma “Jeannie” (O’Neal) McElhaney. After graduation from Norman High School in 1977, he attended the University of Oklahoma for 7 years earning degrees in both Petroleum Engineering and Computer Science Engineering. He had been a season ticket holder for both basketball and football since he was 13 years old. He also enjoyed golfing and attending Thunder games.
Though he had a deep love for sports, there was no question that his deepest passion was for his family. He loved traveling and taking his family on vacations all over the world. Whatever his children’s interests were he was involved to help them succeed.
He coached Katie’s soccer and basketball teams growing up, and was a lifelong active member in the boy scouts.
His travels were many, but he always looked forward to his annual trip to Vegas for sports activities with his dear friend Kevin Potts. Kelly was also active in the Knights of Columbus at St. Thomas More.
He is preceded in death by his parents and his infant brother, David Gene.
