Bruce Allan Spiller

NORMAN — Bruce Allan Spiller, 59, of San Diego, passed peacefully from this life Sunday, June 30, 2013. Bruce died at home from cardiac arrest following a brief illness. He was born in Beaufort, S.C., on July 7, 1953, and moved to Norman with his family at age 5.

A “Life celebration and 60th birthday party” was hosted as a tribute to his memory on July 7 in San Diego.

He graduated from Norman High School in 1971, where he played basketball. Bruce earned a BBA from the University of Oklahoma in 1976. While in Norman, he attended McFarlin Memorial United Methodist Church.

In the late 1970s, he moved to San Diego and was employed for many years in the hospitality industry, where he marketed, planned and organized large corporate and private events. During the early ’90s, he completed additional higher education at San Diego State University in the wine industry, which became his professional passion. Bruce was employed at San Diego Cellars and was in the process of transforming the company to an urban winery by implementing a business plan he created that is unique to the area.

Bruce celebrated the wonders of nature and disdained our pollution of planet Earth. He was very educated on current events and was adamant about man’s responsibility for global climate change. He was a tall, vibrant person who loved life and was very energetic in all endeavors and his extensive travels.

Bruce shared his zest, humor and counsel with many friends and family who he inspired and enjoyed. He was an active member of the OU Club of San Diego and was an avid and informed fan of all OU sports. Bruce was also a fan of the Oklahoma City Thunder and enjoyed golf.

He was preceded in death by his parents, J.O. and Thelma (T.J.) Spiller, his grandparents and other relatives, all formerly from Seminole.

He is survived by his sister, Linda Spiller Maltezos of Denver; brother, Dr. James D. Spiller and nephew James W. Spiller of Evansville, Ind.; and many loving relatives throughout the country.
