NORMAN — Dorothy “Tootsie” Prater, 84, lifelong resident of Norman, passed away Aug. 31, 2013. Tootsie was born April 20, 1929, in Noble to Lacy and Sylvia (Harshberger) Claunch.
In her younger years, she loved bowling in a league along with her sister, Alma. Tootsie worked as a bookkeeper for Central State Hospital before her retirement. After retiring, she stayed busy keeping all of her great-grandchildren, who lovingly called her “Nana.” In her later years, Tootsie and her husband enjoyed traveling. She also enjoyed writing and doing genealogy and with her dear childhood friend, Marybeth, was able to publish her first book in 2009 entitled “Tootsie’s Family Album.” Tootsie was a member of the First Baptist Church in Norman.
She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Doyle Gill II; and sister, Alma Upchurch.
Survivors include her husband, Norman Prater of the home; daughter, Alverna Black and husband R.B.; sister, Lavonne Minadeo; grandchildren, Dava Shumway, Cara DeLong, Jeana Courtois, and Caitlin Hinman; great-grandchildren, Madison, Mia, Blake, Hayden, and Avery Shumway, and Brooks Courtois; and many nieces, nephews, loved ones and friends.
Visitation will be 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday. Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at the Havenbrook Funeral Home chapel with interment following at IOOF Cemetery in Norman.
