NORMAN — Velma Belle Jones Ramey, 92, passed away peacefully Monday, Sept. 2, 2013, in Norman.
Burial will be in Highland Cemetery in Lawton with private graveside services pending.
She was born Jan. 24, 1921, in Chickasha to Nina Belle and Walter Jones.
She moved to Lawton in the early ’40s, where she met and later married Palmer Ramey in 1944. They lived in Lawton all their married life. She was a homemaker; he was a Lawton businessman, and together they raised three children.
She was a Christian and an active member of First Baptist Church of Lawton. She was a member of the Carolyn Hunt Club, Lawton Book and Play Club and several women’s civic organizations until her move to Norman in December 2010.
In addition to her work in the community, she openly welcomed friends and family, whether for a night, a month or however long they needed and for whatever support they needed.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 51 years, Palmer “Pont” Ramey; her sister, Vyvyan Thompson; her brother, Henry Jones; and a grandson, William “Bill” Powell.
Velma is survived by her three children, Saundra Powell and her husband John of Lawton, Barbara Wiseman and her husband Ed of Norman and Dr. Palmer R. Ramey Jr. and his wife Cindy of Norman; her grandchildren J. D. Powell and his wife Terri of Lawton, Waylen Wiseman and his wife Diane of Tulsa, Marla Duncan and her husband Dr. David Duncan of Norman, Dr. Nichole Ramey and her husband Jade of Durango, Colo., Dr. Jordan Ramey and his wife Dr. Kelli Ramey of Calgary, Canada, and Dr. Joel Ramey and wife Aubrae of Northumberland, Pa.; 18 great- grandchildren; and 12 great-great-grandchildren.
