James ‘Jimmy’ Sweetman


The Norman Transcript

NORMAN — James “Jimmy” Sweetman was born to Ollie and Artie (McWhirter) Sweetman on Sept. 7, 1930. He departed this life Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2013, at his home east of Noble at the age of 83 years.

Mr. Sweetman grew up and graduated from Maysville High School. He entered the U.S. Army and received an honorable discharge. He married Joyce Richardson in Maysville on Oct. 16, 1954, and was called to active duty again in the U.S. Army for 14 months as an aircraft electrician in Germany before being discharged again.

He was employed with Tinker Air Force Base for more than 30 years as an electrician for the fire alarm systems before his retirement. He and his wife moved to Noble from Norman in 1966 after he found the perfect 80 acres that he wanted to buy. His family and the farm became his life.

He walked each one of his children and grandchildren over each step of the farm as each one grew up. He loved the farm, gardening, fishing and sitting in his backyard reading a good book.

He was a member of Maguire Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Paul Don; and two sisters, Barbara Duty and Sue Skaggs.

Those who survive him include his wife, Joyce of the home; one son, Mike Sweetman and wife Mia of Ponca City; two daughters, Dana Perry and husband Rick of Noble and Laurie Mercer and husband Jim of Moore; eight grandchildren, Kyle and Tyler Perry, Emily, Natalie and Sara Mercer and Anjali, Ian and Nathan Sweetman; one brother, Gary Sweetman of Lexington; one sister, Linda Lee of Dibble; and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Friday at Maguire Baptist Church on East Maguire Road in Noble.

Interment will follow at Fairview Maguire Cemetery in Noble.

Visitation will be from 2 to 6 p.m. today.

Services are arranged and directed by McMahans Funeral Home.
