NORMAN — Longtime Basin, Wyo., resident, Barbara Jean (Strange) Stewart, 81, passed away Monday, Dec. 3, 2012, at South Big Horn County Critical Access Hospital between Basin and Greybull, Wyo.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 6, at First Baptist Church in Basin with Kent Dempsey, pastor, officiating. A viewing will be from noon to 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 5, at Atwood Family Chapel in Basin. Viewing will continue before the service from 12:30 to 1 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Basin. Burial will be in Riverview Memorial Gardens in Worland, Wy. Arrangements are by Atwood Family Funeral Directors Inc.

Barbara was born Jan. 9, 1931, at Spearfish, S.D., to Harry Edward and Opal Irene (Gumm) Strange. When she was 8 years old, the family moved to Powell, Wyo. Barbara attended schools in Powell and Elk Basin, graduating from Powell High School in 1948 and then attending Northwest Community College and the University of Wyoming at Laramie.

She was employed by a lawyer in Powell and also as a secretary for the Powell Northwest College. After her marriage, she taught in three schools on Owl Creek (Middleton, Embar, and Anchor) and at Hamilton Dome. She substituted at Hyattville and Basin. She also drove buses for 11 years. She began a child care service while still in Powell which continued for 54 years and included several hundred children. She and her husband were foster parents to 57 children. They had three children of their own.

She married William Henry Stewart, son of J.C. (“Pat”) and Saloma Mae (Smith) Stewart of Worland on June 25, 1950. They farmed their ranch on Owl Creek for 16 years. A daughter, Susan Kaye, and two sons, Thomas Edward and James David, were born to them there. After selling the ranch, they lived in Thermopolis; at Wilsall, Mont.; Cody, Powell, Meeteetse, Worland, Hyattville and Basin, Wyoming.

Her husband Bill died on Aug. 14, 1995, of a massive heart attack; and one son, Thomas Edward, died Oct. 6, 2003.

Barbara is survived by a daughter, Susan Kaye and husband Lyndal Caddell of Norman; and one son, James David and wife Shirley Stewart of Colorado Springs, Colo.; five grandchildren, Melissa Suzanne Caddell, Jonathan Lyn Caddell, and Stanley Glenn Caddell, all of Norman, and Brandon Michael and wife Emily Stewart and Karissa Eileen Stewart, all of Colorado Springs.

Memorials in Barbara’s name will be received at American National Bank, 700 Big Horn Avenue, Worland, WY 82401. Proceeds will go to Midway Clinic for medical equipment.
